Blastocystis hominis: Single celled organism that can cause abdominal cramping, gas, bloating, and sometimes anal itching.
Tapeworms: These intruders can grow as long as 30-60 feet in human intestines.
(There are currently 5,000 different species of tapeworms)
Hookworms: They suck blood from the intestinal walls
Giardia: Infection from this parasite is from drinking contaminated water. It can survive in chlorinated water and live in mountain streams (nicknamed, Beaver Fever or backpackers diarrhea). About 2.5 million cases are reported annually.
Blood Flukes: These mature in snails, and them complete their lifecycle by borrowing through human skin, and swimming through the veins. These pesky ones can infect more than 200 million people
Pinworms: The most familiar roundworm in the western world. Worldwide, roughly 209 million people are infected. Most frequent signs on pinworm are anal itching at night (where the female pinworm will migrate there to lay her eggs) Children are the most common carriers.
Roundworms: like Ringworm are very common and seen topically, while less common are Trichinosis which is often overlooked.
